How will China's Coal-Derived Fuels and Biofuels Industries Evolve?

Beijing, Dec.6th, 2007
China Synfuels Summit 2007, responding to China's more determined planning to develop synthetic fuels industry in a faster pace, is dedicated to deliver the most definitive voice in China's synfuels industry. This year's annual is taking place on Dec. 6th&7th at Hong Kong Macau Center, Swiss?tel Hotel and will be focusing on the five major types of synthetic fuels in China—CTL, Methanol, DME, Bioethanol, Biodiesel. We aim to examine the respective development paths of the five oil-substitutes, the prospective competition landscape looming in this industry and the biggest obstacles needed to be overcome.

China's voracious demand for energy, the high and volatile oil price and growing awareness of curbing carbon emission have promoted domestic energy security and sustainable development to the top of government's political agenda. During the event, officials from National Development & Reform Commission and Ministry of Finance will give the special addresses on China's strategy and direction of developing synthetic fuels and also bring forward comprehensive explication on government's role in China's synthetic fuels sector.

It is known to all that biofuels have rapidly entered China's energy policy discourse. So far, China is the third largest biofuels producer, only behind Brazil and the U.S.A.. The National Development & Reform Commission, China's top economic policy planner, has set a target that biofuels would cover a quarter of the transportation needs. Meanwhile, Ministry of Science and Technology plans that the total biodiesel production would reach 1.5-2 million tons by 2010, and 12 million tons by 2020. However, the primary feedstock for biofuels, especially for ethanol, has become a problem. Therefore, energy crops are now at the center of a wide debate in China that covers energy security and food security. Concerning this issue, Yue Guojun, General Manager of bio-chemical and bio-energy division of COFCO, would deliver a speech on the proper ways of solving the problem.? Moreover, Guo-Hua Miao, General Manager of China R &D Centre from DuPont, will discuss from the perspective on improving the biofuels production efficiencies.

On the other hand, as far as the rising grain prices are concerned, in June 2007 the Chinese central government banned the use of grain crops to produce ethanol. Fortunately, China's huge coal reserves will supply most of its energy for decades to come while China's soaring demand for oil and natural gas has been roiling world markets. Chinese government is desperate to cut its dependence on foreign sources of energy; this puts Shenhua and China National Coal Group Corporation, two largest coal companies in China, at the center of China's massive effort to keep industrializing and modernizing. During this conference, coal-derived fuels would be properly discussed. Milton Catelin, Chief Executive from World Coal Institute, will portray holistic outlook of global clean coal initiatives. Zhang Yuzhuo, Vice President from Shenhua Group Corporation Limited, is expected to demonstrate Shenhua's coal-based fuels strategies. In addition, Chen Liming, Executive Vice President of Sasol China, which is Shenhua's partner and the biggest coal-to-motor-fuel producer in the world, is invited to the conference to expound the energy scenario.

Another issue in this conference is based on China's increasing dependence on foreign oil, which has put transportation fuels as a growing focus of the country's policy. It is reported that half the vehicles made by General Motors, Ford Motor and the Chrysler unit of DaimlerChrysler by 2010could be able to run on biodiesel or E85.? As one of the most significant events in this industry, Volkswagen and Daimler AG have each acquired a minority shareholding in CHOREN Industries GmbH who is currently building the world's first commercial industrial scale BTL plant. It is said that Volkswagen has been making efforts on alternative energies for a long time. Zhang Suixin, Executive Vice President and Member of the Board of Management from Volkswagen Group China, is invited to speak on the automobile industry's prospects of synfuels as transportation fuels. Furthermore, Conrad Hai-Li Bucheleres, Business Development Manager from CHOREN Industries GmbH, will expatiate on the topic from the technological angle.

Meanwhile hedging strategies for market players, market trends & investment opportunities of coal-derived fuels, cellulose-based ethanol and coal gasification technology will also be addressed in the event.

As international interest and participation in China's synfuels industry continue to grow, the Energy of China Journal and the China Decision Makers Consultancy are proud to present the 1st annual elite gathering China Synfuels Summit 2007 on Dec.6th & 7th in Beijing which is officially supported by Energy Research Institute of National Development and Reform Commission. It is the first and only international event in China combining together coal-derived fuels and biofuels, which makes it a perfect opportunity to take a panorama of the whole synfuels industry in China.
